A 45-minute lesson

One way to run the pack as a full lesson. Swap any step for your coursebook's own activity.

  1. 5min

    1. Warm-up

Show the feelings words; learners pick the one that fits their week and say why.

    Feelings: words and pictures →
  2. 10min

    2. Present

Relationship phrasal verbs on the board (get on with, fall out, make up), then a model story in the past simple: how you met a friend.

  3. 10min

    3. Practise

Pairs tell each other how they met their best friend; for a lighter class, use the meeting-new-people role play instead.

    Meeting new people →
  4. 15min

    4. Speak

The B1 friendship questions in small groups (or family life for a more mature class).

  5. 5min

    5. Wrap-up

Finish the sentence: 'A good friend is someone who…' Everyone adds one idea.

Total: 45 minutes

Three extra practice tasks

Written for this theme, no printing needed. Use them as fillers, homework ideas or a second lesson.

  1. 1. Relationship timeline

Learners draw a timeline of an important friendship (met, fell out, made up…) and tell the story to a partner.

Model languageWe met at university in 2010. We fell out once, but we made up a week later.

  2. 2. Dear advice

Give short relationship problems (a friend always cancels…). Groups write a reply with two suggestions.

Model languageWhy don't you tell her how you feel? You could suggest a regular day to meet.

  3. 3. Who influenced you?

Learners talk for one minute about a person who changed their life. Listeners ask two questions each.

Model languageMy first boss taught me to ask questions. She was always patient.
