30 games you can play with just a whiteboard

I spent years cutting cards for games that lasted four minutes. Then one day I counted how many games need nothing but the whiteboard already hanging in the room — and stopped cutting. Here are the thirty I actually use, sorted by what they practise. Every one works on a shared screen in online lessons too.
Word & vocabulary games
- Hangman, but kind — draw a flower losing petals instead of the gallows. Same suspense, softer stakes. Prep: 0 min.
- Pictionary / Crocodile on the board — one child draws the secret word, everyone guesses. Teams optional. Prep: 0 min.
- Backs to the board — one player faces the class, a word appears behind them, the class explains it without saying it. Prep: 0 min.
- Flyswatter — write 10 words scattered on the board; two players, two (imaginary) swatters; you call a definition, first to slap the word scores. Prep: 1 min.
- Word ladder — change one letter at a time: cat → cot → dot. Race two teams on two halves of the board. Prep: 1 min.
- Categories grid — draw a 3×3 grid of category names; teams fill cells with examples against the timer. Prep: 1 min.
Review & quiz games
- Review tic-tac-toe — a 3×3 grid where each cell hides a question; answer correctly to place your X or O. Prep: 1 min.
- Board race — two columns, one per team; kids run up in relay to write answers (words with 'ea', numbers spelled out, past forms). Prep: 0 min.
- Correct my mistakes — write 5 sentences, each with one error; pairs hunt them down. The fastest pair explains. Prep: 1 min.
- Mystery word reveal — write the answer hidden under sticky notes or dashes; every correct class answer reveals a letter. Prep: 1 min.
Whole-class favourites
- 20 questions — think of a thing; the class gets 20 yes/no questions to find it.
- One-word story — the class builds a story one word per child; you scribe it on the board, then read the masterpiece aloud.
- Odd one out — write four words, kids find the stranger and (the important part) explain why. Accept every defensible answer.
- Secret number — write 1–100, kids narrow it down with 'higher/lower'. Two minutes of pure suspense.
