Spelling games

Spelling drills are the fastest way to make a child hate a language, and spelling games are one of the fastest ways to make them fluent readers. The difference is only whether there is a balloon to save or a bear to rescue.

Start with short words from a topic the child already knows by ear — spelling is much easier when the word is already in the mouth.

Questions teachers ask

At what age can a child start spelling games?

Once they recognise most letters — usually around five or six. Before that, letter games turn into guessing, and guessing is not practice.

Which topics have the shortest words?

Colours, pets, food, family and the body. Save transport, jobs and the town for later — those are lovely topics with long, discouraging spellings.

Is there anything to print for handwriting?

Every topic pack has a tracing sheet — say it, trace the grey letters, then write it alone — and a 12×12 word search. Both are A4 and free.
