Sight words: the 20 little words that unlock real sentences

Some words refuse to play by phonics rules — 'the' will never sound out politely. Kids need to know a small set by sight, instantly, because these words are the mortar of every sentence. The good news: twenty of them cover an enormous share of children's text.
The starting twenty
I, a, the, is, it, in, on, and, you, me, my, we, he, she, can, see, go, to, like, yes. Two a week is a strong pace; celebrate each one like a new pet.
Games for instant recognition
- Flash race — the word appears for one second (card or screen); shout it before it hides.
- Sight word slap — five words on the table; you say one, first hand on it wins. Online: point and shout.
- Word parking — 'park' toy cars on the word you call. Vehicles make everything better.
- Sentence building — magic moment: THE + CAT + IS + BIG from cards. The child reads their first sentence and the room changes.
Blend them into topic play
Sight words are glue, so glue them to topic words the child loves: after Memory with the animals pack, build 'I see a cat', 'It is big' from cards. Ten seconds of reading per game round — invisible, cumulative, decisive.
