CVC word games: the 'cat-dog-sun' stage done joyfully

CVC words β cat, dog, sun, big β are where sounds click into reading. This stage decides whether a child files reading under 'things I can do' or 'things that are hard'. The games below exist to stack early, loud, frequent wins.
Word families first
Don't read random words β read families: cat, hat, bat, sat. The child decodes '-at' once and then only swaps the first letter: four wins for the price of one decode. Families to start with: -at, -an, -en, -ig, -og, -un.
- Family ladder β write 'cat'; change one letter each step: catβhatβhotβdot. Read every rung aloud.
- Rhyme basket β you say a family word; the child throws a (real or imaginary) ball into the right basket: -at or -og?
Blending games
- Robot talk β you speak like a robot ('sβ¦uβ¦n'), the child 'repairs' you by saying it fast. Then swap roles.
- Sound slide β three fingers up; touch one per sound, then sweep all three: 'c-a-tβ¦ cat!'
- Scramble, easy topics β our Word Scramble on 3-letter animal and colour words is CVC practice with fireworks.
- Flash and read β show a printed CVC flashcard word-side for three seconds. Read it? Keep it. Collection = motivation.
When it doesn't click
- Blends but forgets the start? Shorten: blend just two sounds (a-t) before three.
- Guesses from pictures? Cover the picture, celebrate 'sound detective work' instead.
- Tires in minutes? Two CVC words per lesson is progress. This is a marathon walked in baby steps.
β Take this with you
Families over random words, robot-blending over flashcard pressure, and a growing pile of 'words I own'. The cat-hat-bat stage, done joyfully, makes every later stage easier.
