Bingo beyond basics: 10 variations teachers rarely try

Bingo's secret is that the grid is neutral — WHAT you call and HOW they mark is where the teaching hides. Same cards, different call rule, and suddenly it's a listening lesson, a grammar drill or a speaking game.
Ten call-rule variations
- Definition bingo — call 'it says meow', not 'cat'.
- Sound bingo — call the first SOUND: 'something starting with sss'.
- Action bingo — mime the word silently; they mark what they saw.
- Reverse bingo — the CHILD calls, you and the toys mark. Speaking practice hidden in role reversal.
- Sentence bingo — only mark if the sentence is TRUE: 'A whale is small' (don't mark!).
- Story bingo — tell a story; kids mark words as they appear in it.
- Unlucky bingo — a full line LOSES. Watch the tactics flip.
- Memory bingo — call five words up front; kids mark from memory afterwards.
- Question bingo — kids must ASK for clues: 'Is it an animal?' before marking.
- Whisper bingo — entire game in whispers. Pairs beautifully with a sleepy bear.
