Turn any exercise into a game: 8 universal formats

Here's the secret that saved my Sunday evenings: you don't need a new game for every exercise. You need a small set of game shells — formats that wrap around any content. Exercise 7 on page 40 is boring; the same exercise as a relay race with dice is an event. Below are the eight shells I reach for, plus one worked example.
The eight shells
- 1 · Team points — split the class, every correct answer scores. The oldest trick and still the strongest. Works for: literally anything.
- 2 · Race / relay — same exercise, but answers are delivered to the board one runner at a time. Works for: short written answers.
- 3 · Dice power — a die decides how many points an answer is worth (or which question you get). Randomness keeps weak and strong players level.
- 4 · Board-game overlay — draw a winding path of 20 cells; a correct answer rolls the die and moves your token. Any worksheet becomes a journey.
- 5 · Jeopardy grid — questions sorted into categories at 100–500 points; teams pick 'Animals for 300'. Works for: revision lessons.
- 6 · Mystery reveal — every completed item uncovers a piece of a hidden picture or a letter of a secret word. Curiosity does the motivating.
- 7 · Beat the timer — the class against three minutes, not against each other. Great for cooperative moods and shy groups.
- 8 · Teacher vs class — every correct answer is a point for them, every miss a point for you. They will destroy you. They will love it.
One vocabulary set, three games
Take ten food words. Shell 1: two teams name them from your definitions, a point each. Shell 4: draw the 20-cell path; naming a word correctly earns a dice roll. Shell 6: each correct word reveals one line of a pizza you're drawing; the class 'wins' the pizza on word ten. Same ten words, three different lessons — and the kids think you prepared three games.
⭐ Take this with you
Memorise the eight shells and you'll never 'not have a game' again. Content changes daily; the engine stays. Wheel for turns, dice for luck, timer for tension, teams for energy.
