How a Podcast Is Made

Podcasts can sound very relaxed, as if two friends are just chatting. But behind a good episode there is usually a lot of work. Here is how a typical podcast is made, from the first idea to the moment you press play.

It starts with planning. The team decides what the episode is about and who they want to talk to. They research the topic and write questions or a rough script. Even shows that sound completely natural usually have a plan, because without one, a conversation can easily go round in circles.

Next comes recording. Many podcasters record at home, so they choose a quiet room with soft things in it, like curtains, carpets or clothes in a wardrobe. These stop the sound from bouncing off the walls. A decent microphone matters more than an expensive studio. Guests who live far away are often recorded online, and sometimes each person records their own voice on their own computer, so that the sound quality is better.

Then the editor takes over, and this is often the longest part of the process. An hour of recording might become a thirty-minute episode. The editor cuts out long pauses, mistakes and parts that are boring or off topic. They also make sure every voice is at a similar volume, and they add music at the beginning and the end.

When the episode is ready, it is uploaded to a hosting service. This service creates a feed, a kind of list that podcast apps check regularly. When a new episode appears in the feed, it shows up in listeners' apps automatically. The team usually also writes a short description and shares short clips on social media to find new listeners.

So the next time a podcast sounds easy and natural, remember: someone probably spent hours making it sound that way.
