What things do you have at home that you almost never use?

A Library of Things

Do you need a drill to put up one shelf? Or a tent for one weekend of camping? Many people buy these things, use them once or twice, and then keep them in a cupboard for years. A “library of things” is a different idea.

It works like a normal library, but you don't borrow books. You borrow useful objects: tools, sewing machines, camping equipment, games, ladders and even plates and cups for a party. You become a member, choose what you need and bring it back after a few days. Some libraries of things are free. Others ask for a small payment.

There are now libraries of things in many cities in Europe and North America, and the idea is spreading. Some are inside public libraries. Others are run by volunteers in community centres or small shops.

Why do people like them? First, they save money. A good drill is expensive, but borrowing one costs very little. Second, they save space, and that is important when you live in a small flat. Third, they are good for the planet, because people buy fewer new things.

There is another reason, too. Many libraries of things have workshops where volunteers teach people to repair a bike or use a sewing machine. People meet their neighbours there and learn new skills.

So next time you need something for just one day, ask yourself a question: do I really need to buy it, or can I borrow it?
