Every online teacher has a nightmare lesson story that starts with 'the file wouldn't open'. This is the anti-nightmare kit: games that live entirely in your head and your students' rooms. No files. No second screen. Nothing to break.
The room is your flashcard set
Your student sits in a room full of English words: bed, window, lamp, toy, book. A whole lesson can run on what's within arm's reach.
- Scavenger hunt — 'Find something yellow!' Escalate: 'Find something you can write with… something older than you!'
- Room tour — the student gives a 60-second tour: 'This is my bed. These are my toys.' New words come to you.
- Count it — 'How many books can you see? Count in English!' Works for windows, pens, teddy bears.
- Hide and describe — the student hides an object while your eyes are 'closed', then guides you: 'It is under something soft…'
Voice-only games (camera can even be off)
- I spy with my little eye — the online version: 'something in YOUR room that starts with B'.
- Word tennis — a topic, and you bounce words back and forth: cat — dog — fish… until someone repeats or stalls.
- Yes-no trap — answer questions without saying yes or no. Kids adore catching the teacher.
- Story chain — one sentence each: 'One day a small dragon…' Absurd endings guaranteed.
When you DO have one tab
