10 chat box games that sneak writing into a speaking lesson

Writing is the skill online lessons quietly drop โ no notebooks to check, no worksheets to hand out. The chat box fixes that without feeling like writing at all. For kids, typing IS playing; use it.
Spelling races
- Picture flash โ show a flashcard for two seconds; kids type the word from memory.
- Backwards words โ type 'tac'; first student to send 'cat' scores.
- Missing letters โ send 'el_ph_nt'; kids race to send the full word.
- Category burst โ name a topic ('food!'); kids have 60 seconds to type as many words as they can. Count together after.
Sentence builders
- Grow the sentence โ you send 'I see'; each student adds ONE word in turn: 'I see a', 'I see a big'โฆ
- Fix my mistake โ send 'the cat are black'; first correct fix wins and explains why.
- Unscramble โ send 'dog / the / runs'; kids type the sentence in order.
- Question ping-pong โ you type a question, a student answers AND asks the next one to a named classmate.
Make it fair for slow typers
Racing rewards fast fingers, not good English. Alternate race rounds with 'everyone sends' rounds: kids type their answer but wait; on 'three, two, one โ send!' all answers land together, and every correct one scores.
โญ Take this with you
One chat game per lesson is enough โ five minutes of stealth writing practice, three hundred words typed a month. Their spelling will thank you by autumn.
