Say each word together first. Younger children can cross letters off the bank as they use them; older ones fold the answers line under before they start.

How to use it in class

  1. Say every word first. Name each picture together before pencils move, and stretch the missing sound: “c-a-a-at”. A child who hears the vowel finds the letter; one who guesses from the picture alone writes any letter that fits.

  2. Use the letter bank, then fold it. Younger children cross letters off the bank as they use them, so the last gap checks itself. For a harder round, fold the bank and the answers line under before you hand the sheet out.

  3. Watch the vowels. Most gaps are vowels on purpose: they are where spelling and sound part ways in English. When a child writes “e” for “ee”, say both words aloud side by side rather than correcting the letter.
