A false friend is a word that looks borrowed but took a different job on the way: magazine looks exactly like магазин and means a journal. For Russian-speaking children these words are booby traps laid inside their own vocabulary — and, taught right, they are the funniest ten minutes of the term.

The dozen that actually bite

  • magazine — a journal to read, NOT a shop (that's a store or shop).
  • fabric — cloth, NOT a factory (factory).
  • artist — any painter or performer, NOT only артист (an actor is an actor).
  • family — the relatives, NOT фамилия (that's a surname or last name).
  • intelligent — clever, NOT интеллигентный (cultured, refined).
  • accurate — precise, NOT аккуратный (tidy, careful).
  • sympathetic — kind and understanding, NOT симпатичный (cute, nice-looking).
  • biscuit — a cookie, NOT бисквит (that's sponge cake).
  • wagon — a cart; a train car is a carriage or car, not always вагон.
  • clay — the stuff you model, NOT клей (glue).
  • list — a list of items, NOT лист (a sheet of paper or a leaf).
  • brilliant — wonderful, NOT бриллиант (a diamond).

Teach them as jokes, not warnings

The wrong way is a red-ink list of dangers. The right way is theatre: walk into a magazine asking to buy bread, glue a picture with clay, call the class hamster intelligent and deeply sympathetic. Children who have LAUGHED at the trap do not fall into it — the absurd image is the mnemonic, and it costs one giggle to install.

One pair a week is plenty. Put the week's false friend on the board Monday, milk it for jokes all week, and add it to Friday's quiz forever after — spaced repetition disguised as a running gag.
