Random word & letter generator

Free · no ads · no accounts

Some lesson moments just need a word: the warm-up where whoever is picked makes a sentence with it, the spelling round, the drawing game on the board. Choose a topic, or all of them, press the button, and one word lands as big as the screen — picture, word and a listen button. Switch to letters for phonics: the same huge display, A to Z. With “no repeats” on, nothing comes back until everything has had its turn.

The words behind the picker

The picker draws from the same 599 picture words as the site's flashcards and games, sorted into 55 topics. Every word has its own page with a picture and its sound. Open the picture dictionary →

Words letter by letter, A to Z

How teachers use it

  • Warm-up: the word that lands is the one the next child puts into a sentence.
  • Phonics: pick a letter, and the class names three words that start with it.
  • Review a topic before a test — with no repeats, every word comes up exactly once.

Questions teachers ask

Is it really random?

Yes. Each pick is made by the browser's random number generator the moment you press the button. The quick shuffle you see is only decoration, and it is skipped when your device asks for reduced motion.

Where do the words come from?

From the site's picture word bank — the same words as the flashcards, games and picture dictionary, grouped by topic. Each word links to its dictionary page, and each letter to its alphabet page.

Will the same word come up twice?

Never twice in a row. Tick “No repeats until all are shown” and every word in the topic (or every letter) comes up once before any returns; a counter under the buttons shows how far through you are.

All of them on one screen
