A CVC word is three sounds in a row: a consonant, a short vowel, a consonant — c·a·t, p·i·g, s·u·n. They are the first words a child can read all the way through by blending, which is why phonics teaching usually starts here.
Teach one vowel at a time. The vowel is coloured on every card below because it is the one sound that stays put while the consonants around it change. A word with a double letter, like bell, still counts: ll is one sound.

Three ways to use the list
- Say it, then read it: tap a word, the class repeats it, then points to each letter while saying its sound.
- Change one sound: start from cat and ask for hat, hot, hop — one letter at a time, across the groups.
- Sort by vowel: print the page, cut out the cards, mix two groups and let the class sort them back.
