Read the list first. Before the hunt, read the word list aloud together, pointing at the pictures. The children then hunt for words they can say, not for strings of letters.

Model one word. On the board, find the first letter, then check the next one across, down or diagonally down to the right — on this sheet words never run backwards or upwards. Circle each word with a long oval so letters shared by two words stay readable.

A key on the wall. Tick “Answer key” to print the solved grid as a second page. Pin it up for self-checking; early finishers turn their sheet over and write the words from memory.
