Games for 5–6 year olds
Five and six is the crossover year: the child still needs pictures, but letters have started to mean something. This is where memory in picture-to-word mode earns its place, and where the first spelling game stops being frustrating and starts being a puzzle.
Keep both doors open — picture mode when the topic is new, word mode when it is a review. The same pack does both.

When should I switch from pictures to words?
When the child can say the word without the picture. Then the written form is a label for something they already own, not a new thing to learn on top of a new thing.
Are word scramble and balloon words too hard here?
Not if you stay with the short words. Pick a topic full of three- and four-letter words — colours, pets, food — and both games feel like a win rather than a test.
How do I get them ready for real school English?
Numbers, colours, shapes and classroom words carry most of a first-year syllabus. Play those four packs until they are automatic, and the school textbook becomes a review book.
