Puppets and props: the co-teacher that never gets tired

A puppet solves problems a lesson plan can't: it can be wrong, be shy, be naughty and be corrected — everything a child needs permission to be. For online lessons with 3–7 year olds, one puppet plus a small box of props does more than any subscription.

Five puppet routines that carry lessons

  • The greeter — the puppet wakes up at lesson start and must be greeted properly before class begins.
  • The mistake machine — puppet answers WRONG ('A cow says meow!'); the child corrects with delight.
  • The shy student — puppet whispers answers into the child's ear; the child must 'translate' aloud.
  • The judge — puppet awards today's stars, kisses the screen, faints from excellent answers.
  • The sleeper — when noise rises, the puppet 'falls asleep' and only whispers can wake it kindly.

The online prop box (12 items, one shoebox)

  • One puppet or plush animal (the co-teacher), two smaller toys (students for role plays).
  • Real fruit or plastic food, a toy car, a ball — instant vocabulary anchors.
  • A magic bag (any cloth bag) — everything becomes a mystery when it's inside.
  • A bell or squeaker for game shows, a paper crown for the 'king's court', a small mirror for emotions.

Puppet rules that keep the magic

  • The puppet has ONE voice and ONE character — pick both before the first lesson.
  • The puppet never scolds. It can be sad, never angry.
  • The puppet speaks only English. It 'doesn't understand' Russian — the most natural immersion device ever invented.
