The answer key at the bottom is printed upside down — fold it back before copying!

How to use it in class

  1. Say it before you draw. Go down the pictures together first: you point, the class says the word. Then the sheet is real reading — a child who has just said “cat” looks for c-a-t, not for a word that looks about right.

  2. Pencil first, then colour. Lines go in pencil so they can be rubbed out. Then each pair gets its own colour — picture, line and word — and you can check a whole table at a glance.

  3. Let partners check. Tick “Answer key” to print the key on a page of its own, and pin it up. Partners swap sheets and read each pair aloud — “one, cat” — checking against the key on the wall.
