How to play

  1. Four words on the branch. One does not belong.

  2. Tap the odd one out.

  3. The rule is then said out loud — three are animals, a carrot is a vegetable.

  4. Or switch to baskets: one word arrives at a time.

  5. Send each one to the basket it belongs in.

Variations

Three ways to play it differently once the class knows the rules.

  1. Baskets

Switch to baskets: one word arrives at a time, and the class sends it to the right one — two baskets or three.

  2. Say the rule first

Before tapping, the child says why the odd one out doesn't belong — the rule at the end checks them.

  3. Grammar sorts

Sort by grammar instead of meaning: a or an, one or many, a short or a long vowel.
