Counting games: numbers that stick before math class does

Numbers are the most useful early vocabulary nobody drills properly: kids chant one-to-ten like a song lyric but freeze at 'give me FOUR cards'. The gap is between reciting and USING — and it closes through games where quantities matter.
Using, not reciting
- Give me N — 'Give me three pencils… five fingers… one nose!' Speed it up until it's comedy.
- Count everything real — stairs to the lesson, windows in the room, teddy's ears. Counting the world beats counting dots.
- Movement math — 'Jump THREE times, clap TWO' — the body verifies comprehension instantly.
- Dice sums — roll two of our dice: say both numbers, then the total. First addition, zero worksheets.
The shop: numbers' natural habitat
Every number skill meets in the shop role play: prices to read, money to count, change to argue about. Draw price tags together (1–10), give the child ten paper coins, and let them BUY the flashcards they'll learn next. Spending money on words — the most motivating economy ever designed.
