When a child won't talk online: the silence toolkit

Online silence feels louder than classroom silence — no neighbour to whisper to, nowhere to hide but the mute button. Before reaching for tricks, diagnose: the tool for shyness fails on confusion, and the tool for confusion fails on fatigue.
Four silences, four causes
- Eyes down, shoulders up = shy. Lower the price of speech.
- Eyes wandering, random guesses = lost. Rewind two steps, no drama.
- Sighs, chair gymnastics = bored. The task is too easy — raise stakes, not volume.
- Slumped, slow blinks = tired. Switch to receiving mode: you talk, they point and nod.
Tools for the shy silence
- Answer through the puppet — kids talk TO toys and FOR toys years before they talk to adults.
- Choice answers — 'Is it a cat or a dog?' beats 'What is it?' by an entire universe of safety.
- Typing bridge — allow chat answers for a week; voice follows when trust arrives.
- Games where words are moves — in Memory or Name 3 speech happens TO PLAY, not to be evaluated.
⭐ Take this with you
Diagnose before you treat: shy, lost, bored or tired. Puppets and choices for shyness, rewinds for confusion, stakes for boredom, mercy for fatigue — and patience for the two-lesson echo.
