Managing noise with games, not shushing

'Shhh' is a loan you take against your authority — it works twice, then becomes wallpaper. Noise is energy, and energy responds to design: give loudness legal windows and quietness a scoreboard, and the shushing retires itself.
Volume as mechanic
- The volume dial — your hand is a dial: high = loud chorus, low = whisper. Kids track it like an orchestra.
- Whisper rounds — any game, played entirely in whispers. Forbidden-library atmosphere does half the teaching.
- The scream window — ten legal seconds to shout the answer, then a zip gesture. Planned loudness prevents unplanned.
- Don't wake the fox — our Sleeping Fox listens for real: keep him asleep through the whole review round.
Silent signals
Teach three hand signs in week one: palm up (freeze), finger to ear (listen), two fingers walking (sit down). A teacher who can steer without words never has to outshout a room — online or off.
⭐ Take this with you
Legalise the loud, gamify the quiet, and steer with hands. When volume is part of the game, controlling it stops being a battle you fight and becomes a level everyone plays.
