The Job Interview

هذا نص أدبي: الشخصيات والأحداث من نسج الخيال.

Carmen had rehearsed her answers so many times that she could have recited them in her sleep. Why did she want to leave accounting after twelve years? Why graphic design, at thirty-eight? What could she offer that a twenty-three-year-old graduate couldn't? She had a confident answer for every question, and a portfolio she had spent two years of evenings and weekends building.

What she hadn't prepared for was the coffee. Ten minutes before the interview, in the lift on the way up to the studio, a man turned round too quickly and half a cup of black coffee landed on her white shirt. He apologised so many times that she ended up reassuring him, then spent the remaining minutes in the bathroom, trying and failing to make the stain disappear.

She walked into the interview with her jacket buttoned up to her neck, and the first person she saw across the table was the man from the lift.

For a moment, nobody said anything. Then he laughed, a little nervously, and introduced himself as Jonas, the creative director. “I believe I owe you a shirt,” he said. The other two interviewers looked confused, and Carmen, to her own surprise, told them the whole story. By the end of it, everyone was laughing, and the tension that had been sitting in her chest all morning had simply gone.

The rest of the interview felt less like a test and more like a conversation. When Jonas asked why she had changed careers so late, she forgot her prepared answer and told the truth: for years she had been making spreadsheets look beautiful because nobody else in the office cared how they looked, and eventually she had realised that the part of her job she loved most was the part nobody was paying her for.

She got the job. Months later, over lunch, Jonas admitted that her portfolio had been strong but not the strongest they had seen. “What decided it,” he said, “was how you handled the coffee. We spend half our time here dealing with things going wrong. You didn't panic. You made it funny.”

Carmen still has the shirt. The stain never came out, but she has decided she doesn't mind.
