Why We Procrastinate

You have an essay to write, and it's due tomorrow. So what do you do? You tidy your desk, check your phone, make a snack and watch “just one” video. Hours later, the essay still hasn't been started. If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Almost everyone procrastinates sometimes.

For a long time, people thought that procrastination was simply a problem of laziness or bad time management. But many psychologists now see it differently. They say it is mainly a problem of managing feelings. When a task makes us feel bored, anxious or unsure, we avoid starting it, because avoiding it makes us feel better right now. The problem is that the good feeling doesn't last, and the task is still there, usually with less time to do it.

This explains why we often put off the things that matter most to us. If an essay feels important, we may worry that it won't be good enough. That worry makes the task even more unpleasant, so we delay it again.

So what can help? One idea is to make the first step very small. Instead of “write my essay”, the task becomes “open the document and write one sentence”. Starting is often the hardest part, and once we've begun, it's easier to continue. Another idea is to remove distractions, for example by leaving your phone in another room.

A more surprising suggestion is to be kinder to yourself. In one study, university students who forgave themselves for procrastinating before an exam procrastinated less before the next one. Feeling guilty, it seems, doesn't make us work harder. It just adds another bad feeling that we want to escape from.

Procrastination isn't a sign that you are a bad person. It's a very human way of dealing with difficult feelings. Understanding that can be the first step towards changing it.
